Travel / F.A.Q.

First, a Passport

If you weren't born in Mexico or aren't currently living there, chances are you'll need a passport!

  • Try to get the process started to renew or apply for a passport at least 2-3 months before the travel date, so ideally by February 2025. There are expedited options, but err on the side of caution and get the ball rolling soon!

  • If you already have a passport, make sure it's not expired or expiring soon.

  • Want to make the trip easier? You can consider Global Entry to avoid long lines going through customs to and from the United States. We don’t have it and have never experienced extremely long waits, but that is an option.

  • Lastly, you do not need any other additional visas or travel documents, just a passport!

For more information and to get the process started, explore the US Department of State website.

📍 How do I get into the city?

Most major U.S. and international airlines offer direct flights to Mexico City International Airport (MEX). The main Mexican airline is Aeromexico, which is very safe & reliable. The airport is located about 30-45 minutes from the city center, depending on traffic.

🚕 What’s the best way to get from the airport to my hotel?

Uber is reliable and widely used in CDMX. Make sure to connect to the airport Wi-Fi and book through the app.

Authorized taxis (called sitios) are available at the airport. Look for official taxi stands inside the terminals. They will sell you a ticket and you’ll head to that company’s door to be assigned the next available driver.

Private transfers can be pre-booked if you prefer a driver waiting for you. If you need help with this, let us know and we can connect you with our wedding planners, who can arrange a private driver.

🛂 Do I need a visa to visit Mexico?

If you’re traveling from the United States, Canada, or the European Union, you do not need a visa for short tourist stays (up to 180 days). Just bring a valid passport!

🏛️ How do I get to the venue?

The ceremony and reception will be held at General Prim - see our Itinerary page for additional details.

A shuttle going to/from the venue will be arranged from Hotel Marquis Reforma, but the venue is centrally located and accessible via Uber/Lyft from a variety of areas.

💸 What currency should I use?

The local currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN), which generally trades around 20:1 versus the U.S. Dollar (~$100 MXN for a street taco). Credit cards are accepted at most restaurants, hotels, and stores, but it’s a good idea to carry cash for smaller establishments and tips.

Exchange rate tip: You can withdraw pesos from ATMs in the city or at the airport for a good exchange rate.

🌡️ What will the weather be like?

Spring in Mexico City (March-May) is typically mild and warm, with temperatures averaging between 65°F - 80°F (18°C - 27°C) during the day and cooling down in the evening. Pack light layers and a jacket for the cooler nights.

🏙️ Is Mexico City safe for tourists?

Yes! Mexico City is a large, developed place that is used to hosting tourists from all over the world. Like anywhere, it has areas that are safer than others. Here are a few safety tips:

  • Stick to well-known neighborhoods like Roma, Condesa, Polanco, Reforma, Centro Histórico, and Coyoacán. Our venue and all our recommended locations are in safe, fun areas like these.
  • Use Uber or authorized taxis instead of hailing cabs on the street.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings and keep valuables secure.

🗣️ Do people speak English in Mexico City?

While many people in tourist areas speak English, knowing a few Spanish phrases is always helpful and appreciated! Here are some basics:

    HelloHola
Good morning / good dayBuenos días / buen día
    Thank youGracias
    PleasePor favor
    Excuse mePerdón / disculpe
    SorryLo siento
    Where is…?¿Dónde está…?
    “I want to go to…”Quiero ir a…
    “I would like…”Me gustaría…
“How much does it cost?”¿Cuánto cuesta?
“The bill, please”La cuenta, por favor
    GoodbyeAdios

🍽️ What’s the food and water situation?

Food: The food scene in CDMX is incredible! There’s no shortage of great restaurants, and few better places for Mexican food.

Tip: If you eat fresh greens or anything uncooked, stick to sit-down restaurants as they will wash it with clean, treated water. Fresh fruit (anything with a peel) and cooked food will be perfectly fine to eat.

Water: Avoid drinking tap water unless you’re a local. Stick to bottled water, which is widely available at any market.

Tip: If you want to be extra careful, you can use the bottled water to rinse your toothbrush instead of the tap.

📞 Do I need to get an international phone plan?

You can either:

  1. Check with your carrier for international roaming options. Many of them have easy/automatic options, particularly for Mexico.
  2. Buy a local SIM card upon arrival for data and calls (easily available at convenience stores or kiosks in the airport).

🧳 What should I pack?

Semi-formal attire for the wedding! No white or emerald green :)

Comfortable shoes for exploring the city.

Light layers for variable weather.

Sunscreen and sunglasses – the sun can be strong!

A small bag for daily essentials.

🎉 Any must-see attractions if I want to explore?

If you have time before or after the wedding, here are some great places:

  • Teotihuacán Pyramids
  • Chapultepec Park & Castle
  • Frida Kahlo Museum (La Casa Azul)
  • Centro Histórico & Zócalo

🚇 Is public transportation a good option?

If you're feeling adventurous! We rarely take this because Ubers are so cheap and city is walkable, but if you do, some tips:

Metro (Subway):
  • Cheap (about 5 pesos per ride).
  • Be cautious with valuables.
Metrobús (Bus Rapid Transit):
  • Another affordable and reliable option with designated lanes. Tickets can be purchased at machines in the stations.
  • Avoid regular city buses unless you’re familiar with the routes.

🗺️ How do I know where I’m going?

Google Maps works well in CDMX and can give you directions for walking, driving, and public transit.

Download offline maps in case you lose cell service.

👗 What’s the dress code?

Ceremony & Reception: Semi-formal attire (cocktail dresses, gowns, suits, tuxedos). Avoid white, ivory, or green (unless it's a tie/jewelry/accent piece).

Welcome Event: Smart casual or cocktail attire. Dress fun!

Tornaborna / Farewell Event: Casual and comfortable.
